One day I unexpectedly pass Crofton House School, the all-girls school I attended. I am surprised to see the renovations to the Senior School: there is now a whole new building where there once was just ivy-covered stone walls and a wrought iron gate. I walk around the corner to the main entrance on Blenheim Street, not sure what to expect. There I see more renovations in progress. I ask a construction worker what they are doing.

“Oh, we’re making it more beautiful. Some new curbs, more landscaping. Beautification, basically.”

I nod, not sure what to think, as Crofton was never not beautiful.

“You went here?” he asks me.

“Yeah. Grad 2000.”

“Cool. I was ’98, from PW*,” he responds.

I concede that many years have passed and the school is allowed to make improvements. But when I return to do a sketch, I choose the portion of the wall with the least changes apparent, by the bus stop where the ivy still grows thick.
